Captivated by the mystery of existence, Liliana explores the human condition and the vitality of nature. Investigating the mental, physical and emotional aspects through individual perspective.
In my practice I combine anatomical figures with abstraction - to dissect the multilayers of our vessels. My process of experimenting with materials, mark making, and gesturing captures the energetic and chaotic human essence. Working specifically with wet mediums allows me to co-create my pieces as they react without my lead – for example powdered pigment, ink and diluted paint will flourish to create abstract marks with a bleeding effect. Various other techniques I have used are collage, printing and sowing to illustrate the human anatomy in a decorative manner. Revealing the inner workings of the body is an investigation into what humans are at the deepest level; flesh, muscle, bone, organs, blood vessels and more mysteriously, consciousness.
I began by representing the physical layers of the body; but as I progress further into the subject, I am more interested in diving deeper to understand the non-physical aspect, which I aim to convey through experimental painting. My series ‘Still Death’ is a still life collection of raw meat, wherein I explore the textures and architecture of flesh, bone and fat. This subject matter interested me because of the adjacent biological relation between humans and other animals, consequently this project pressured me to consider the ethical relationship we have with other beings. ‘Still Death’ was also made in reference to abstract expressionist Chaïm Soutine’s vibrant and intense carcass paintings. Occasionally in practice I will use automatic subconscious painting techniques, much like surrealist figure and landscape artist Ithell Colquhoun, her work greatly influenced me in process of combining biological science with ambiguity.
My work communicates concepts in regards to the collective human experience; death, birth, love, awareness, sexuality, connection to self, others and surroundings, etc. I feel that collectively we neglect a sense of deep appreciation for existence, digital culture conditions us to live passively and in an ego driven routine. My inspiration flows most effortlessly when I feel meditative and detached from my conventional regimen. I initially aim to confront the audience with a sense of disturbance through anatomizing and dissecting the figures in my work, but upon closer inspection admire the sensitive colours, textures, patterns and the human form.
